Voices and Rhythms: Exploring Afrodescendencia and Community Empowerment in Puerto Rico and Mexico
Feb. 13 / 3:30-5pm / TBD
Join us for a research colloquium featuring CLLAS grantees Alai Reyes-Santos, Professor of Practice at the University of Oregon’s School of Law, and Abraham Landa, a graduate student pursuing a PhD in Musicology. This event brings together two innovative research projects that explore community self-determination and Afrodescendencia in Puerto Rico and Mexico.
Alai Reyes-Santos will present “Borifuturos Campesinos,” a digital exhibition that traces the history of Cidra, Puerto Rico, and its transformation from an agricultural to an industrial economy. The project highlights community self-determination initiatives and advocates for local economic and environmental sustainability.
Abraham Landa will present “Black Mexico: Music, Dance, and the Construction of Afrodescendencia in Costa Chica,” a research project that explores the performance of African music and dance in Costa Chica, Mexico. The project examines how Afro-Mexican communities use cultural expressions to claim historical presence and cultural recognition.
This colloquium offers a unique opportunity to engage with the intersection of community self-determination, Afrodescendencia, and cultural expression in Puerto Rico and Mexico. Join us for a thought-provoking discussion and exploration of these critical topics.
