PeaceJam Northwest presents Oscar Arias Sanchez. In 1948, Costa Rica disbanded its military, choosing to reallocate the budget into education, health care and environmental protections, and to act as model for neutrality and peaceful negotiation to other countries. During his first term as President, Arias used his country’s reputation, and his notion of investing in “real human security” to inspire dialogue between warring factions in neighboring Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador. For this effort, he received the Peace Prize in 1987. Dr. Arias will be giving a public lecture discussing his historic peace plan to invest in real human security on Friday, March 10th, from 7:00-8:30pm in the Straub Auditorium on the University of Oregon’s campus. This talk will be free and open to the public, however seating is limited.
