Christopher Chávez

CLLAS Director

Chris is the Carolyn S. Chambers Distinguished Professor of Advertising and the Director of the Center for Latina/o and Latin American Studies. His research lies at the intersection of globalization, media, and culture. Specifically, his research explores two main themes: the ways in which global media industries organize and re-organize collective identity, and the degree to which marginalized communities can be empowered within the constraints of marketplace dynamics.

Operations Director

Eli  joined CLLAS in September of 2009 as a graduate research assistant. He is a returned Peace Corps volunteer from Nicaragua and holds an MA degree in International Studies from the University of Oregon.

Janice Daniels

Digital Engagement Specialist

Janice joined the CLLAS team in May 2023. She has been an active marketing and communications specialist for more than 15 years, having contributed her journalistic and digital media skills to publications such as CBS Radio, Eugene Weekly, Sacramento News & Review, and The State Hornet; as well as numerous nonprofit organizations across Eugene and Sacramento.

Anabelle Molina ’24- Community Outreach Coordinator

Anabelle is a recent graduate of the University of Oregon, class of 2024, who has been working at CLLAS since September 202 . She is a first-generation American with a rich cultural heritage from Chile, China, and Japan. Originally from Minnesota, Anabelle has a love for nature and the West Coast, which drew her to the University of Oregon. During her time at CLLAS, Anabelle has developed skills in Canva and Adobe Express, creating beautiful graphics to spotlight researchers and promote CLLAS events. When she’s not working on her latest innovative or creative project, Anabelle enjoys reading, writing, cooking, and trying new things. She’s always up for a challenge and has explored hobbies like horseback riding, ATV riding, and making scented candles. With a talent for innovation and problem-solving, Anabelle aims to pursue project management and entrepreneurship, while maintaining a balance between her career and personal interests. 

 

Adamaryz Lopez Navarette ’25- Research & Communications Assistant

Adamaryz is a senior Spatial Data Science and Technology major from Hermiston, Oregon. She is a trailblazing first-generation college student and PathwayOregon scholarship recipient, who has become a dedicated ambassador for the Center for Latino/a and Latin American Studies (CLLAS). Her enthusiasm and leadership shine through during tabling events and as a spokesperson for the Latino Roots Project. In 2023-2024, Adamaryz participated in UO’s Latino Roots courses, where she got to learn about Oregon’s rich Latino history and produce a documentary film about her father’s experience living in Oregon. Beyond her academic pursuits, Adamaryz cherishes time with loved ones, enjoys reading, and watching TV shows and films that ignite her imagination and passion for storytelling.

 

Susana Velázquez-Huanosta ’26- Social Media Assistant

Susana is a junior majoring in Education and Journalism, class of 2026. Originally from Seaside, Oregon, Susana was drawn to the University of Oregon for its research opportunities, campus resources, and student benefits. She is excited to connect with the Center for Latino/a and Latin American Studies and potentially collaborate with other schools. Susana hopes to expand her experience in media and research, particularly in Latin American Studies. She has already demonstrated her skills and enthusiasm by taking the lead on social media during events, creating engaging video reels, conducting interviews with researchers and attendees, and showcasing her photography skills. Susana has also excelled in event planning, managing large projects, and meeting new people. Outside of academics, Susana enjoys cooking, reading, and watching movies. With a positive attitude and willingness to ask for help when needed, Susana is eager to make the most of her time at UO and explore her passions.
