2016 CLLAS Scholar-in-Residence: Anabel Lopez-Salinas

For winter and spring terms of AY 2015-16, CLLAS welcomes CLLAS Visiting Scholar, Anabel Lopez-Salinas, a native of Oaxaca, Mexico. She holds a master’s degree in regional and technological development from the Instituto Tecnológico de Oaxaca. Her focus was on economic development and migration between the United States and the Mixteca, the poorest region of Oaxaca and the birthplace of her parents. In 2010 Anabel came to Oregon to pursue a PhD in public affairs and policy at Portland State University. Since her arrival, she has worked and volunteered with the Latino immigrant community in Oregon and served as board secretary of the Beaverton Hispanic Center. While working on her dissertation, entitled “Exploring Transnational Economic, Social, and Political Participation of Mexican Immigrants in Oregon,” she has interviewed immigrants and public officials on the economic, political, and social incorporation of immigrants in Oregon. While at the University of Oregon, she will help coordinate the CLLAS Latino Civic Participation Project (LCPP).

2014-15 CLLAS Scholar-in-Residence: Ana-Marine Lara

Ana-Maurine Lara is the first ever Visiting Scholar with the UO Center for Latino/a and Latin American Studies. She recently completed her PhD in African American Studies and Anthropology at Yale University. Her first academic book (in-progress) is titled Bodies and Souls: Sexual Terror in God’s New World, and is based on her graduate research, which focused on LGBT political activism and the Catholic state in the Dominican Republic.

She is an award-winning novelist and poet. Her novels include Erzulie’s Skirt (RedBone Press 2006) and When the Sun Once Again Sang to the People (KRK Ediciones 2011); her short stories and poems have been featured in numerous anthologies and literary magazines. Her published scholarship engages topics on Afro-Latin@ and Afro-Diasporic queer identities and aesthetics.

She will give a CLLAS Visiting Scholar talk on February 12, 2015, at 4 pm. Location TBD.
