David Maawad: Resplandor de roca/Shining Rock

April 3, 2012toApril 29, 2012

David Maawad, born in Oaxaca, Mexico, in 1952, has been documenting the social, cultural, and environmental impact of mining in Mexico over the course of more than thirty years with spectacular vistas of unearthly postindustrial landscapes. His black and white photographs capture the human dimensions of this economic activity with astonishing beauty, showing the resilience and strength of Mexican mine workers, but also the difficult conditions under which they perform their labor.

The works will be on view at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (1430 Johnson Lane, Eugene, Oregon 97403) from April 3-29, 2012.  The artist will give a public talk on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at 5:30 pm in the Ford Lecture Hall at the JSMA. › Continue reading

Whatever Happened to Zulay? An Otavaleña’s Journey is the story of a remarkable Ecuadoran woman who went through several life changes and maintained some continuity in her life, a continuity that made her successful in a new world, and surprisingly, at the same time remain attached to her own traditional one. A film that will appeal to everyone interested in cultural change, gender studies, folklore, ethnicity, Latin American communities, indigeneity, weaving, filmmakers, anthropology, textiles, oral history, folk architecture, and religion.

A UO professor of Folklore and English, Sharon Sherman appears along with Zulay in this new documentary, as they both make changes and talk about the project.

Sponsored by the UO Center for the Study of Women in Society and the UO Folklore Program.
